In this month’s English Newsletter we’re going to focus on grammar, specifically the tenses. First we’ll discuss the tenses from a theoretical point of view and then you’ll be able to watch short videos (in Hebrew) that explain each tense separately.
What are verbs?
Verbs are words that express an action, occurrence or state of being. For example:
• Jump (action)
• Begin (occurrence)
• Suffer (state of being)
In English, each and every verb has three basic forms:
V1 V2 V3
play played played
force9 forced forced
sleep slept slept
eat ate eaten
give gave given
The V1 is also referred to as the base form of the verb. If you want to make sure that a verb is in the V1 form, try adding the preposition “to” before the word. For example, you can say “to play”, but you can’t say “to played”.
The V2 is used in the past tense and the V3 is used in the perfect tenses (Present Perfect & Past Perfect) and also in the passive forms.
What are tenses?
You can think of tenses as hollow (=empty) shapes, into which verbs are inserted in order to create meaning.
Everyone knows that the tenses give us information about the time that something happens. But if that were all the tenses did, we would only need three tenses (past, present or future). In fact, the tenses can give us a lot more information than just when something happened and therefore in English we have more than 10 tenses.
In addition to time, the tenses can give us information about the duration of an action and how one action relates to another action.
Take a look at these examples:
• I am reading a book. This sentence is in the Present Progressive tense and therefore we know that the action is happening now.
• I had eaten by myself, by the time my wife got home. Here we can see the relationship between two actions. The verb in the Past Perfect tense (had eaten) happened before the action in the Past Simple tense (got).
