What are parts of speech? Parts of speech are the building blocks of a language. Let’s look at the eight parts of speech in the English language:
Nouns – things or people. There are different ways of distinguishing between nouns. Here are three main categories:
Single versus plural: cat-cats, bed-beds, city-cities, man-men, person-people.
Count vs. non-count: picture (count); water (non-count).
Tangible vs. intangible (=abstract): car (tangible); love (intangible)
Verbs – actions or situations. Verbs have three basic forms:
Verb 1 – base form – play, go, eat.
Verb 2 – used in the past tense – played, went, ate.
Verb 3 –used in the perfect tenses and the passive form–played, gone, eaten
Adjectives–describe nouns: big, small, pretty, smart, ridiculous, confusing, good
