ניוזלטר אנגלית #23 – parts of speech

Hi everyone!

In this month’s English Newsletter, we’re going to talk about parts of speech.
Read the article and then do the exercises. When you finish, you can check your answers using the answer sheet at the bottom of the page

What are parts of speech? Parts of speech are the building blocks of a language. Let’s look at the eight parts of speech in the English language:

  1. Nouns – things or people. There are different ways of distinguishing between nouns. Here are three main categories:
    • Single versus plural: cat-cats, bed-beds, city-cities, man-men, person-people.
    • Count vs. non-count: picture (count); water (non-count).
    • Tangible vs. intangible (=abstract): car (tangible); love (intangible)
  2. Verbs – actions or situations. Verbs have three basic forms:
    • Verb 1 – base form – play, go, eat.
    • Verb 2 – used in the past tense – played, went, ate.
    • Verb 3 –used in the perfect tenses and the passive form–played, gone, eaten
  3. Adjectives–describe nouns: big, small, pretty, smart, ridiculous, confusing, good
  4. Adverbs – describe verbs: slowly, gracefully, well, beautifully
  5. Prepositions – connect between words: to, on, above, below, in
  6. Pronouns – words that are used instead of nouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they
  7. Conjunctions – connect between words or sentences: because, but, and
  8. Interjections – words that express a feeling or sensation: ouch!
Now let’s focus on nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Lets do some exercises!
